LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is making national headlines again, this time for offering her own spin about why the Democratic Party isn’t reaching the American people.
NPR’s Morning Edition sat down with Whitmer on Tuesday and asked if Democratic Party focused too much on inclusivity.
“Democrats are a big tent,” Whitmer said in the interview. “We want everyone to be successful [and] sometimes maybe our message is too obtuse for people,” she added.
Even though Whitmer is on an “investment mission” in Switzerland this week, her “obtuse” comments reached the desk of The Five on Fox News where hosts added their two cents.
“The message isn’t obtuse. It’s explicit.” said Emily Compagno. “Voters are rejecting it. [Whitmer has] made it quite clear actually that biological boys should play in women’s sports. That we shouldn’t respect the cops or even fund the cops. The list goes on.”
Compagno continued to push back against Whitmer’s “big tent” claims. “You can’t call yourself a ‘big tent’ while punishing half the country and telling half the country that they are the problem,” she said. “She’s doing what a lot of members of her party keep doing which is when they win they say ‘the voters spoke’ and when they lose they say ‘the voters just don’t understand.'”
Whitmer, who helped lead a failed campaign to elect Vice President Kamala Harris to the presidency in 2024 and failed to deliver Michigan’s 15 electoral votes for her party, is one of the names being floated for a possible White House run in 2028. She cannot run again for Michigan governor this year due to term limits.
