This is the second time Johnson has thrown his hat in the ring for governor. Johnson ran in 2022; he was one of several candidates disqualified for alleged signature fraud on their nominating petitions.
Johnson joins a long list of gubernatorial candidates for the 2026 election. They include Democrats Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Marni Sawicki, Kevin Hogan, and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.
The Republican field includes former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, Michigan Senator Aric Nesbitt, Congressman John James, Ralph Rebandt, Joyce Gipson, Evan Space, and former Michigan House Speaker Tom Leonard. Anthony Hudson is running as well, though his website does not list a political affiliation. Former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan switched from Democrat to Independent.
Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has served two terms in office and cannot run again due to term limits.
