LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – On Wednesday, the Michigan Democratic party posted a video on X where state director Curtis Hertel Jr. said killed Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti “was the best of us” and claimed he was “peacefully protesting.”
Hours later, new video emerged of Pretti confronting federal agents 11 days before he was shot. Media reports, including ABC, stated that Pretti appeared to have a gun in his waistband. The video shows Pretti screaming at federal agents, spitting on them, kicking the back of a federal vehicle twice, and breaking the right back light. The News Movement recorded that video on Jan. 13 and described Pretti as “interacting with federal immigration agents.”

Christian Britschgi, a reporter with the Reason news website, wrote Thursday that the video of Pretti’s earlier confrontation with federal agents had no impact on his death.
“Alex Pretti’s Earlier Scuffle With ICE Doesn’t Justify His Death 11 Days Later,” the Reason headline stated. “Video of that scuffle does show that federal agents can manage to not shoot even violent protestors.”
President Donald Trump responded Friday to the more recent video of Pretti’s confrontation with federal agents.
“Agitator and, perhaps, insurrectionist, Alex Pretti’s stock has gone way down with the just released video of him screaming and spitting in the face of a very calm and under control ICE Officer, and then crazily kicking in a new and very expensive government vehicle, so hard and violent, in fact, that the tail light broke off in pieces,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It was quite a display of abuse and anger, for all to see, crazed and out of control. The ICE Officer was calm and cool, not an easy thing to be under those circumstances! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
Hertel’s Jan. 28 video said: ‘Alex Pretti was the best of us. He was a nurse at a veterans’ hospital and somebody that was peacefully protesting and was shot in broad daylight while on the ground while having at least 10 officers on top of him at the time. What’s happening in this country, it’s awful. I’m proud that every Democrat in the House that is from Michigan voted against continuing funding for DHS.”
