WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – With the roar of a championship crowd still echoing, President Donald Trump used the national spotlight of Tuesday’s State of the Union to announce that Team USA goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The honor comes after after the Commerce Township, Michigan native’s 41-save performance sealed gold against Canada on Saturday.

Trump marveled at one of Hellebuyck’s most spectacular saves — a puck that he deflected from behind his back away from the goal to keep Team USA in the game.
“The members of this great hockey squad will be very happy to hear that I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor which has been given to many athletes over the years,” Trump said. “Great athletes have gotten that and I thought he deserved it. What a special job you did and what special champions you are.”
Five other members of the gold medal team have Michigan ties: Kyle Connor (Shelby Township), Jack Hughes (Canton), Quinn Hughes (Canton), Dylan Larkin (Waterford), and Zach Werenski (Grosse Pointe Woods).
