HILLSDALE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Facing the same nursing shortages felt across Michigan, Hillsdale Hospital is looking close to home and opening its checkbook.
The hospital is now accepting applications for the 2026 Doris Whorley Nursing Scholarship, which offers up to $50,000 in tuition aid to high school seniors pursuing nursing degrees.

Eligible students can receive up to $10,000 per year for as many as five years, covering either an associate degree or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Additionally, the funding is issued as a loan that is forgiven if recipients accept employment with Hillsdale Hospital after completing their degree, tying the scholarship directly to the local health care workforce.
The scholarship is named for Doris Whorley, a registered nurse who spent nearly six decades at Hillsdale Hospital, serving in roles ranging from emergency care to nursing leadership and patient advocacy.
Hospital CEO Jeremiah Hodshire said Whorley’s career represents the kind of long-term commitment the hospital hopes to encourage.
