ROMULUS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) Romulus is pushing back against an immigration detention facility that, at least for now, exists only in reports.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, the White House is exploring the purchase of warehouse-style properties nationwide to expand U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention capacity, including a potential 500-bed facility in Romulus.

Notably, Romulus is the second Metro Detroit community to surface in reports as a potential immigration detention site, following Highland Park.

Federal officials have not confirmed a site, timeline, or agreement. Even so, Democratic lawmakers have moved quickly to oppose the idea.

State Sen. Darrin Camilleri said there is “no concrete evidence” that a detention center is being developed in Romulus, but said he is coordinating with local officials to resist any such proposal.

“Whether it be in my district or anywhere else, and we will fight back with every tool at our disposal to stop it,” Camilleri said.

Currently, Michigan hosts the state’s largest ICE facility at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, which can hold up to 1,800 detainees.
