LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Northern Michigan communities are still recovering from the March 2025 ice storms, and lawmakers from that region are thanking President Donald Trump’s release of additional federal funds for relief.

The announcement comes after Michigan House Republicans worked to secure federal disaster relief funding in the aftermath of those ice storms that devastated the region.

“I witnessed the devastation the ice storm brought firsthand,” said Rep. Cam Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “The damage more closely resembled a hurricane than a winter storm. I’m glad President Trump took matters into his own hands and secured this funding for our communities.”

Cavitt appeared on The Steve Gruber Show on Tuesday before Trump made his announcement, citing the lack of movement in the U.S. Senate as a problem. “The Democrats in the Senate aren’t going to fund the Department of Homeland Security and that’s where FEMA is at,” Cavitt said.

In addition, Rep. Cavitt’s colleague Rep. Ken Borton (R-Gaylord) called Trump’s announcement “a massive win for the people of Northern Michigan” and said the announcement offers “hope.” He added, “I’m proud to work with President Trump to deliver significant relief to the communities up north that are too often overlooked by state agencies.”
