LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Dead people are on Michigan’s voter rolls.
That’s according to one Michigan lawmaker. During a recent Michigan House Election Integrity Committee hearing, former Martin Township Clerk and current committee chair Rep. Rachelle Smit (R-Martin) mentioned the amount of errors present in the system when she served as a local clerk.

“I took off a dead voter in my township,” Rep. Smit said. “Guess what? That dead voter was put back on. Not by me. That was done by the Secretary of State office.”
In addition, Smit mentioned her family member who died 20 years ago. According to Smit, that relative’s name was placed back on the rolls in 2020, and mailed a voter application along with an early voting postcard.
“That’s a problem,” Smit added.
Michigan House Bill 4765 seeks to eliminate these problems. It would require proof of United States citizenship when registering to vote and to show picture identification when voting.
This revelation comes as Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson runs for governor with election integrity problems hanging over her head. Her office is under fire for not complying with a Michigan House subpoena regarding election training materials and having noncitizens cast votes in the last election.
