ST. IGNACE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The 2025-26 season set a record for the Mackinac Bridge – but not for the right reasons.
Officials say this season set a record for bridge closures due to falling ice. Falling ice forced 12 closures of the Mighty Mac. No one was injured, but the falling ice damaged several vehicles.

Mackinac Bridge Authority Spokesman James Lake says ice on the bridge does not normally damage the bridge’s structure. However, the danger of falling ice greatly impacts travelers. “It’s also a hardship for the communities of Mackinaw City and St. Ignace that rely so heavily on it,” Lakes told the media. “It’s not just a connection of the state, but just the commuting to their jobs, to their work, to their school.”
Even with the closures, 211,284 vehicles crossed the Mackinac Bridge in February 2026, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority. That’s down .3% from February 2025.
