GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Grand Rapids officials are moving forward with plans for a taxpayer-funded “all-gender locker room” inside the Grand Rapids Police Department headquarters, a project that could cost up to $262,985. The proposal received unanimous approval from the city’s Community Development Committee following a request from former Deputy Chief Kristen Rogers before she retired in 2024.

In a time when many police departments are struggling with staffing shortages, recruitment problems and public safety concerns, the idea that city leaders are now spending hundreds of thousands of dollars reworking police locker rooms is leaving plenty of residents shaking their heads

According to city documents, the project includes renovating existing interior space at GRPD headquarters to create a new all-gender locker room complete with “an individual toilet, sink, shower and changing area.”

City officials say the goal is to provide “an equitable locker room option” for GRPD staff and align with the city’s “Value of Equity,” a component of the City’s Strategic Plan.

From beat cops to bathroom politics.

The city approved a construction contract with JWK Construction for $149,500, with a total project cost not to exceed $262,985. Still, officials are calling it a “small project.”

Grand Rapids officials argue the department is evolving “to meet the changing needs of its workforce.” But critics online are asking if a taxpayer-funded locker room is really the best use of resources.

A user on X posted about the locker rooms, “Grand Rapids has a double homicide over a kids’ soccer game, and our ‘leaders’ are prioritizing funding for gender neutral GRPD locker rooms? This city is woke joke.”

Many others expressed similar frustration, arguing city leaders seem more focused on progressive social projects than addressing violent crime and public safety concerns.

Case closed? Not exactly.

To be fair, the city isn’t converting the entire department into one giant co-ed changing room straight out of a bad police academy comedy. The documents indicate the new space is an additional locker room option alongside existing male and female facilities.

But the project still leaves some residents asking a practical question: how many police officers will actually feel comfortable using the space with other genders, and why are taxpayers funding another locker room when the department already has separate male and female facilities?
