LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who’s prided herself on two terms of “fighting like hell” for the right to abort babies through the moment of birth, is now touting healthy moms and healthy babies.

Whitmer talks mom and babies, not abortion.

Recently, Whitmer sat down with Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian to discuss Women’s Health Month. Whitmer said, “Support for new moms and babies can’t begin and end at delivery. Here in Michigan, we’re providing extra support through Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies, community health programs, and expanded doula services to keep moms and babies healthy before, during, and after delivery.”

Still “fighting like hell?”

The conversation is a long way from Whitmer’s normal talking points. Whitmer established the “Fight Like Hell” political action committee in 2023. It’s named after the same phrase she’s used repeatedly to push for abortion rights. Her website says the PAC exists to “defend working people, focus on the kitchen table issues and protect our most fundamental freedoms.” This came after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that nationalized abortion, and returned the issue back to the states. A 2022 voter-approved proposal also enshrined abortion in the Michigan constitution.

That’s not all it enshrined. As reported in June 2024, the Reproductive Health Act signed by Gov. Whitmer no longer requires abortion providers to send data on the number of abortions performed.

Planned Parenthood still waiting on Whitmer.

It remains to be seen whether Gov. Whitmer will “fight like hell” as much as she has in the past. Planned Parenthood of Michigan, an abortion provider, is asking Whitmer for $5 million in emergency funding to keep their branches open. Whitmer has not responded.
