LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan voters will decide many key races and local proposals in the Aug. 4 primary election, and they can cast their ballot well in advance.
Absentee ballots will be in the mail starting Thursday, June 25. In addition, Michigan offers nine days of early in-person voting in the lead up to the primary.

Voters will narrow down candidates in several races, including the gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races. In addition, voters cannot “split” their ticket in primary elections, which means they must vote for all Democratic candidates or all Republican candidates. In the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election, voters can cast a ballot for any candidate of any party.
All ballots must be returned by 8 p.m. on election night. Visit the Michigan Voter Information Center for more information.
However, a tussle on Capitol Hill between lawmakers and Postmaster General David Steiner is making waves. In a Senate committee hearing on Wednesday, Steiner said a proposed new rule would mean the United States Postal Service (USPS) won’t deliver mail ballots unless states share their voter lists with the Trump administration.
U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan), the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told Steiner that the rule would “coerce” states into providing the administration with the sensitive voter information. Peters called the March executive order “an unconstitutional subversion of the postal service’s duty.”
The Postal Service should focus on delivering every piece of mail for Americans affordably and efficiently — not decide who gets to vote.
