ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – While plenty of Americans spend their time explaining why the country is falling apart, a German soccer fan named “Freddy” has spent the past few weeks doing something radical: enjoying it.

The World Cup traveler known online as @FreddyLA7 has become one of the internet’s feel-good sensations as he crisscrosses the United States following Germany’s World Cup matches. What started as a soccer trip has turned into a full-blown love letter to America. And along the way, he’s amassed 737K followers on X.

Freddy arrived from Germany expecting soccer. Instead, he discovered Taco Bell, which he reportedly described as “the holy land,” along with Waffle House, Walmart, Bass Pro Shops, Wendy’s, Chili’s, Buffalo Wild Wings and the glorious excess known as Buc-ee’s. Yes, food and drinks seems to be very important to Freddy.

However, he’s also enjoying all of the scenery and all that American cities have to offer – big and small. While traveling, he’s been taking in the mountains, lakes, towns, and friendly people along the way. He has toured college football stadiums, explored the South, met celebrities, visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center, spoke with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and even received help from retired NFL great JJ Watt when travel problems threatened one of his World Cup stops. Not bad for a guy who just wanted to watch soccer.

Then came Michigan.

Recently, Freddy’s American adventure has brought him to Michigan. No, Michigan is not hosting any of the soccer matches, but he drove through the Great Lakes State while traveling from Toronto to Boston for a match on the 29th.

A recent post of his trip through Michigan included going to Ann Arbor where he was impressed by the fraternity buildings in the city. He also got to see the University of Michigan Stadium.

What’s perhaps most fascinating isn’t just Freddy. Other visitors from Europe and elsewhere have gone viral during the World Cup for marveling at things many Americans barely notice anymore: giant flags, open roads, friendly strangers, massive stores, impressive NFL and college football stadiums, and a culture that still celebrates itself without apology.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, Freddy’s road trip has become an unexpected civics lesson. Millions of Americans spend their days doom-scrolling through complaints about the country. Meanwhile, a German tourist is posting excited updates about Taco Bell, Buc-ee’s, NASA, Michigan road trips and American hospitality.

Perhaps the most American thing Freddy discovered wasn’t a fast-food chain at all. It was the realization that this country is still pretty remarkable when you stop long enough to look at it.
