LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A ballot initiative called “Michiganders for Money Out of Politics” (MMOP) may sound good on the surface, but groups like the Michigan Chamber of Commerce are sounding the alarm.

Wendy Block spoke on The Steve Gruber Show recently and spelled out why The Chamber is classifying this initiative as a significant threat to free speech in Michigan. Block said that among other things, the initiative would prohibit advocacy groups, state contractors, and public utilities from donating money to the political process.

“Where it really starts to get dangerous is that it adds new reporting and donor requirements to groups like the Michigan Chamber or Right to Life,” Block said.

According to its website, Michiganders for Money Out of Politics said it works to “dismantle systemic barriers perpetuating inequality by building power.” In addition, the groups says it focuses “on issues from a racial, economic, and gender justice lens.”

Supporters submitted more than 562,000 signatures to the Michigan Board of Elections for review. During a recent press conference, Dr. Aisha Harris addressed the media. “When insurance companies and corporate interests can spend enormous amounts of money influencing the political system, what is best for the patients is too often pushed to the sidelines. That creates a system where lawmakers hear more from lobbyists and donors than from physicians, nurses, and people struggling to afford care,” she said.

The Chamber pushed back, saying the measure “blurs the distinction between campaign activity and issue advocacy, creating uncertainty and potentially chilling grassroots civic engagement.”

Supporters hope to get the measure on the November ballot.
