HARRISVILLE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A Lake Huron rescue near Alcona County ended safely after rough weather and high waves left four people stranded offshore Wednesday.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says a 16-foot sailboat capsized about 1½ miles from shore near Harrisville, leaving two vacationers in the water for about 90 minutes before crews rescued them.

A paddleboarder and a kayaker tried to help, but they also became stranded in 5-foot waves and wind gusts approaching 30 mph. Rescue crews safely brought them ashore as well.

“That successful water rescue of four people on Lake Huron is the best possible outcome and an excellent reminder of the importance of checking and monitoring weather conditions and using proper lifesaving gear when on the water,” said Chief Brandon Kieft of the DNR Law Enforcement Division. “The Great Lakes are especially inviting in the summer months, and we want everyone to safely enjoy them, but they are powerful, often unpredictable bodies of water that must be respected at all times.”

The DNR is reminding people to put safety first before heading onto the water. Officials recommend wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket, taking a boater safety course, inspecting your watercraft before departure, operating your boat sober, carrying a marine radio or other emergency communication device, and letting someone on shore know your plans.
