WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – A Michigan student represented the state well on the national stage when it came to knowledge of American history.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Presidential 1776 Award announced the competition’s three winners: Miriam Washut, a homeschooler from Wyoming; Summer Brondstetter from Washington; and Rowan Kozminski from Michigan. The Presidential 1776 Award is a national student competition that recognizes excellence in American founding history.

High school students from every state competed in a first-round online Impossible Civics Test, with the top scorers advancing to five regional semifinals. The semifinalists then competed in the national finals in Washington, D.C.

While meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, Brondstetter said she plans to attend Hillsdale College. Trump told her he would write a letter of recommendation. Kozminski said he plans to study economics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Each student received a Presidential Challenge Coin and a total of $250,000 in scholarship prizes between them.
