ST. IGNACE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Smoke from the Canadian wildfires is causing smoggy problems in northern Michigan.

The smoke, which looks like a low-hanging fog, forced the Mackinac Bridge Authority to issue a warning for motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge. Officials said travelers must reduce their speed and turn on low-beam headlights.

Meanwhile, a popular Michigan vacation spot is getting smoked out. Chad Bennett with Chad’s Wonderful Walking Tours on Mackinac Island posted an update on Facebook on Wednesday. He said he traveled to St. Ignace after the smoke forced him to cancel today’s walking tour. Bennett showed the ash that had fallen from the skies.

Mackinac Island News and Views issued this warning on social media along with a picture of current conditions. “Mackinac is under an air quality alert,” the post said. “Dense smoke from wildfires to our northwest have enveloped the Island. Our weather photo shows the smoke, but not the smell. Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with seasonably warm summer temperatures and fairly light breezes.”

However, the air quality isn’t just impacting visibility. Great Lakes Weather and Climate said the air quality alert due to wildfire smoke is readily apparent on Mackinac Island. It advised, “Strenuous outdoor activities are not recommended today as the particulates could cause breathing difficulties.”
