HOUGHTON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Wildlife trouble has forced the closure of another campground this month on Isle Royale National Park.

The Duncan Narrows Campground closure stems from increased wolf activity at the campsite after campers failed to store their food properly. Park officials initially closed the campsite from July 6 to July 8. Now, it will remain closed until at least the end of the month.

Park officials say a wolf or wolves entered a shelter by tearing, scratching, and pushing through a screen. The animal or animals pulled out clothing and chewed on a cooler. No campers were present or injured when the incident occurred, but an investigation is underway.

In addition to the Duncan Narrows closure, the Three Mile Campground also is closed through the end of the month because of similar problems.

The park will continue monitoring the campground during the closure and conduct hazing to discourage wolves from entering the area. Like the hazing efforts at Three Mile Campground, park staff will use paintballs, air horns, and motion-sensing noise devices to deter wolves from entering the campground.

The park says Duncan Narrows Campground is accessible only by water to visitors traveling by boat, kayak, or canoe. Officials hope to reopen both Duncan Narrows and Three Mile campgrounds on Aug. 1.
