Johnson, a Lansing Everett High School standout who became a star at Michigan State before winning five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, delivered the gala’s keynote address.
During his remarks, Johnson recognized a special guest in the audience – his fifth- grade teacher, who remained an important figure in his life. He also spoke highly of Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo, praising his leadership, his impact on young people and his commitment to the Lansing and Michigan State communities. Izzo and his wife, Lupe, served as honorary chairs of the Legacy of Magic Gala.
The evening also included guest speakers, a dinner, live and silent auctions and tributes to Johnson and his family.
Speaking to WILX, Johnson said the night meant a great deal. “This is the first time ever we’ve all been honored together,” he said, referring to his entire family.

A mural depicting the Johnson family is also planned for the building next June, with Lansing-area artist Dustin Hunt selected to create it.
