LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan is arriving early in 2028.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) leadership voted to make Michigan one of six states to hold its 2028 Democratic presidential primary election in the early window. That means Michiganders who intend to vote in the Democratic primary will head to the polls on Feb. 22.

South Carolina will hold its primary first on Jan. 22, 2028. Nevada follows on Feb. 1, with New Hampshire voters heading to the polls on Feb. 8. New Mexico will hold its primary on Feb. 15, followed by Michigan on Feb. 22 and Virginia on Feb. 29.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel thanked the DNC, saying it’s important that Michigan be in that early window. “This new calendar, with Michigan as the fifth state, will make sure our 2028 nominee is battle-tested and able to win nationwide,” Hertel said. “The road to the White House runs through Michigan, and we look forward to helping elect a Democratic president in 2028.”
Michigan held its 2020 Democratic presidential primary on March 10, one week after Super Tuesday. In 2024, Michigan was the last state in the DNC’s early primary window to hold its primary, with voters heading to the polls on Feb. 27.
While the Republican Party and President Donald Trump haven’t forgotten about the 2028 primaries, they’re focused on the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump announced that Republicans will hold their first-ever midterm convention ahead of the Nov. 3 elections. The event is intended to boost Republican turnout as the party seeks to maintain control of Congress. The convention will be held in Dallas on Sept. 9 and 10.
