DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The big tent that Democrats brag about doesn’t appear to be so big after all.

Anti-American and antisemitic influencer Hasan Piker, a campaign surrogate of Michigan progressive Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, said he’s not interested in “mending bridges” with those who voted for Haley Stevens. He called those voters “Islamophobic pieces of shit.”

This matters to El-Sayed’s campaign because, up until Tuesday night, the Muslim progressive continued to campaign with Piker and did not renounce him in the lead-up to Michigan’s primary. Piker also reportedly attended El-Sayed’s election night party.

However, while El-Sayed hasn’t distanced himself ideologically from Piker, he appears to be taking a step back publicly.

“He’s a streamer,” El-Sayed said. “I’m focused on trying to win a race for Senate in Michigan.” El-Sayed added, “I understand that this is a very serious election, and we’ve got to come together.”

GOP challenger Mike Rogers has already begun framing the general election as a sharp ideological contrast, quickly zeroing in on El-Sayed’s past comments and political record. “I have never seen someone so radical, so extreme, get nominated by a political party…The Democrat party is lost to this hard core socialist attitude.…”

While El-Sayed received the endorsement of 17 Michigan pastors and a group called “Jews for Abdul,” the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus said El-Sayed’s primary campaign caused serious harm and that he must work to correct it. The group released a statement, saying, “Healing requires accountability and constructive dialogue. If Dr. El-Sayed seeks to represent our entire state in the United States Senate, his campaign must commit to engaging directly with Michigan’s Jewish community demonstrating a genuine commitment to engage with our community on its own terms, respecting the deep connection many Michigan Jews have to Israel, rejecting rhetoric that demonizes the Jewish civic identity, and seeking common ground on life issues that concern all Michiganders.”

However, some Democrats aren’t buying what El-Sayed is selling. Democratic U.S. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania opposes El-Sayed over his support for ending U.S. aid to Israel. He laid out a possible campaign plan for the GOP with Fox News’s Sean Hannity on Wednesday.

“You’re in a general election now,” Fetterman said. “I dare you to keep campaigning with someone like Hasan Piker. If I was a Republican, I would just dump $20 million for ads.”

El-Sayed won Michigan’s U.S. Senate nomination this week in a closely contested race with Stevens. It was so close that the race wasn’t officially called until the morning after the election. Rogers ran uncontested.

The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
