BYRON CENTER, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A massive fire caused extensive damage to a West Michigan church early Monday, leaving parishioners searching for a place to worship as they determine what comes next.

The blaze, which took crews about eight hours to extinguish, destroyed portions of Byron Center Bible Church. Pastor Chad Dejong, visibly emotional as he spoke to the media, said the congregation’s faith remains intact despite the destruction.

“The church is not the building,” Dejong said. “We know God is doing a very good work.”

No one was inside the church when a passerby reported the fire at 3:41 a.m. Monday, and no injuries were reported.

The fire started as storms battered the area. While officials are still investigating the cause, they believe lightning from the storms may have sparked the blaze.

Byron Township Fire Chief Eric Weeringa told reporters that some of the building may be salvaged despite the extensive damage.

“We initially thought we were going to have to tear down part of the sanctuary and did have a meeting with church members while we discussed that,” Weeringa said. “Thankfully, we only had to tear down the gymnasium and the classroom portion on the back.”

Despite the damage, Dejong said the congregation remains strong and plans to hold an outdoor service Sunday morning.

“God is good, and he will use it for his glory … we will be here for the ride,” Dejong said.
