MIDLAND, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A Michigan House seat that has long been a Republican stronghold could become more competitive if recent primary turnout trends continue through the Nov. 3 general election.

The race between Republican incumbent state Rep. Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland) and Democrat AnnMarie Horseman is one to watch. The 95th District, which includes all of Midland County and portions of Gladwin County, has traditionally favored Republicans. The candidates’ stark ideological differences could also make the contest a test of whether the political landscape is changing in this part of mid-Michigan.

Schuette, a two-term incumbent, won reelection in 2024 with 64.3% of the vote. He ran unopposed in the August Republican primary and remains favored by the district’s voting history. Horseman, a special education teacher, has focused her campaign on school funding, health care and affordability. She has also advocated for universal health care.

Horseman’s Financial History Comes Under Scrutiny

Beyond the candidates’ differences on policy, Horseman’s financial history also provides another piece of her background for voters to consider. Court records show Horseman, then known as Ann Marie Mann, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in January 2011. The filing followed foreclosure proceedings and a debt-related lawsuit, followed by eviction proceedings. Horseman reported monthly income of about $2,085, including employment income, support payments and food assistance. Records also show default judgments against her totaling roughly $9,700 in two separate cases.

Gus Portela, communications director for the House Republican Campaign Committee, told Michigan News Source that Horseman’s financial history could concern voters in the 95th District.

“Horseman is hoping to oversee more than $80 billion in taxpayer dollars and is in favor of programs that would raise your taxes and take away your money,” Portela said. “Her past shows a consistent pattern of financial mismanagement and irresponsible behavior. Can she be trusted with your dollars?”

Horseman’s Progressive Positions

Horseman posted “Abolish ICE” on Facebook on Jan. 8, 2026. She has also shared content on TikTok and Facebook opposing efforts to remove books—including Gender Queer—from school libraries.

Michigan News Source contacted Horseman’s campaign for comment but did not receive a response by press time.
