EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A former resident physician is facing sexual assault charges, according to the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS).

Patient reports assault after apppointment

Officials said 39-year-old Arpit Saxena was arrested in Atlanta following sexual assault allegations involving two female patients.

DPPS officers responded to a sexual assault complaint at an MSU Health Care facility on April 3, 2025. A female patient who had just left a medical appointment reported that she had been sexually assaulted by the resident physician who examined her. MSU removed Saxena from patient care four days later and subsequently terminated his employment. Investigators later identified a second woman who reported being sexually assaulted by Saxena.

On Sept. 3, 2026, the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a warrant charging Saxena with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. Third-degree criminal sexual conduct is a felony, while fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct is a high-court misdemeanor.

Saxena remains in custody at the Clayton County Jail in Jonesboro, Georgia, pending an extradition hearing. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Investigators seek additional victims

DPPS officials believe there may be additional victims. They said, “If you were a patient of resident physician Saxena between July 1, 2024, and April 7, 2025, and if you experienced conduct during your care that made you feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or otherwise concerned, we kindly ask you to contact DPPS and allow us an opportunity to listen to your experience,” a statement read.

MSU’s troubled history with physician abuse

This is not the first time MSU has faced allegations of sexual assault involving a physician. Former MSU sports doctor Larry Nassar is serving decades in prison for sexually assaulting female athletes and other patients under the guise of medical treatment.

Saxena’s arrest comes just days after 16 former University of Michigan hockey players filed a lawsuit alleging that they endured sexualized hazing and abuse by teammates while former coach Red Berenson led the program. The lawsuit alleges Berenson and other staff members knew about the abuse during Berenson’s 1984-2001 tenure, but failed to stop it. Berenson has denied knowing about sexual abuse.
