LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Roads are expected to be crowded over Labor Day weekend as people squeeze in a last-minute summer getaway, but travelers will encounter fewer orange cones along the way.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing lane restrictions on nearly 60% of its road and bridge projects statewide to ease holiday traffic delays.

From 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, lane restrictions will be removed from 91 of MDOT’s 156 active projects. However, some equipment, temporary traffic shifts and shoulder closures will remain in place.

If your travel plans include crossing the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day, avoid the area between 6:30 a.m. and noon. The Mighty Mac will be closed to public traffic during the Annual Bridge Walk. Southbound I-75 and US-2 traffic will be stopped at Exit 344 on the north side of the bridge, while northbound I-75 traffic will be stopped at Exit 337 on the south end.
