LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan’s international border crossings will briefly close Friday morning to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Officials are urging commuters to plan accordingly.
The five crossings are:
- International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie
- Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron
- Ambassador Bridge in Detroit
- Gordie Howe International Bridge in Detroit
- Detroit-Windsor Tunnel in Detroit
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said traffic will be cleared from the crossings before 8:46 a.m. Friday. Taps will then be played as the American flag is raised, followed by a moment of silence at each port of entry.
The closures are expected to last no more than 30 minutes before normal operations resume.
Tal Czudner, CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Corporation, is urging travelers to be patient during the brief closure.
“Folks just have to be patient for 15 or 20 minutes while the memorial service happens,” Czudner told CBC News. “It’s one of those things where it’s important that we remember events like that. And some people do get a little bit perturbed when they’re inconvenienced in some way.”
