DETROIT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – More than two years after Detroit synagogue leader Samantha Woll was stabbed to death, the Michigan Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether the man accused in her death can be retried on a home invasion charge.

The state’s highest court announced last week that it will hear arguments from Wayne County prosecutors seeking to retry Michael Jackson-Bolanos for first-degree home invasion.

A jury acquitted Jackson-Bolanos of first-degree premeditated murder and second- degree murder in 2024 but deadlocked on felony murder and first-degree home invasion. He was convicted only of lying to police. A judge later dismissed the deadlocked charges on double-jeopardy grounds, and the Michigan Court of Appeals upheld that decision.

The Supreme Court’s latest order does not revive the felony murder charge. Instead, justices will consider whether double jeopardy also prevents prosecutors from trying Jackson-Bolanos again for home invasion.

Woll’s Murder Still Unsolved

Woll, 40, president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, was found stabbed to death outside her Detroit home in October 2023.

Jackson-Bolanos testified that he discovered Woll’s body while checking vehicles for unlocked doors and touched her neck before leaving without calling police. No one has been convicted of Woll’s murder.

Both sides will receive 20 minutes to make their arguments before the Michigan Supreme Court.
