CANTON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — A mother has been arrested after her toddler pulled a loaded pistol out of a backpack at a daycare facility Monday, according to the Canton Police Department.

Police say the gun belonged to the child’s mother, a nurse, who could face formal charges as early as Wednesday, Sept. 30, WXYZ reported. The outlet also reported that the toddler’s father is a Detroit Police Department officer.

Surveillance footage at Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton showed a daycare worker taking immediate action after noticing the child had a firearm. The pistol was still in its holster, with the trigger and trigger guard completely covered. No one was hurt.

Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy said during a news conference that, despite the outcome, the video was “shocking” to watch.

“I don’t think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved,” he said. “I think it really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone.”

Bialy also commended the daycare staff’s swift action.

“They had a representative, a teacher, instructor that was in that room the entire time, identified what was happening, and took swift action to intervene,” he said. “And had that not happened, I do not know where we would be right now or what kind of conversation I would be having.”

He said the daycare would begin searching all backpacks.

The toddler’s father is not expected to face charges, according to WXYZ. However, Canton police have contacted DPD’s internal affairs division, which will conduct a separate investigation alongside the criminal investigation.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case for a charging decision.
