According to a report from WOOD-TV, Kieran Ansley, 43, a biological woman who identifies as a transgender man and formerly worked at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, faces two felony counts of second-degree child abuse and two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree child abuse.

According to court records, the baby was born in November 2025 and was due to go home in April. When the baby’s mother returned to the neonatal intensive care unit early in the morning on April 3 to visit her child, she discovered bruises and a tongue that had turned blue-black. Ansley allegedly intercepted the baby’s mom before she reached the room and dismissed concerns about the discoloration.

Medical examinations revealed multiple fractures, including broken leg bones and multiple bruises.

27 Visits by Trans Nurse

Hospital records showed Ansley entered the infant’s room 27 times during the overnight shift in recorded entries. Investigators subsequently determined the baby’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse and staff on previous shifts said there had been no evidence of trauma when they were tending to the infant.

Hospital Fires Nurse; Baby Recovering

Corewell Health terminated Ansley’s employment and says it has zero tolerance for abuse. Ansley’s attorney maintains his client has cooperated with investigators and expressed confidence that the investigation will establish the “truth.” Ansley has not been convicted.

Baby Safe at Home

The baby, now 10 months old, is home and reportedly doing “wonderful,” according to her grandfather. Her family is focusing on healing while the criminal case proceeds.
