WILLIAMSTON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – An Ingham County community is mourning the loss of two siblings who died after being struck by a vehicle while riding their bikes.

The Williamston community is showing support for the family of 12-year-old Calvin Shepard and 13-year-old Karalee Shepard. Green and white ribbons have been tied to fences and light poles along Grand River Avenue as the family prepares to say goodbye to both children.

Michigan State Police said the siblings were riding their bikes along Grand River Avenue in Leroy Township on Sept. 5 when they were struck by an SUV. Calvin died at the scene, while Karalee died at the hospital five days later. Both children were wearing helmets.

The children’s mother, Raquel Roark Shepard, posted a tribute on Facebook.

“Our hearts are broken beyond what we can put into words. We find comfort in knowing that Karalee and Calvin are together again and in the loving arms of our Savior,” she wrote.

Shepard said family and friends would be able to say goodbye to both children during one service.

“We had originally planned to hold Calvin’s funeral [last] Saturday, but we simply cannot bear the thought of saying goodbye to our children twice. We have decided to bring Karalee and Calvin together for one funeral service,” she wrote.

The funeral for both children will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 10:00 AM at 431 E Saginaw Street in East Lansing.

The 64-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer that struck the children has not been arrested, and no charges have been announced. The crash remains under investigation.
