LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — An undercover video released Monday, Oct. 19, by O’Keefe Media Group, founded by investigative journalist James O’Keefe, features a Democratic Party organizer claiming that U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed receives illegal campaign contributions from overseas donors.

The group identified the organizer as Abdoul Beckwith and described him as a regional field organizer for Abdul for Senate. El-Sayed’s campaign disputed that description, saying Beckwith had never been employed by the Senate campaign.

“You know, he [Abdul El-Sayed] has people from overseas that donate to him,” Beckwith said, according to O’Keefe Media Group.

The group reported that Beckwith said such donations were prohibited before describing a hypothetical arrangement in which overseas money passes through a family member.

“And then people overseas give money to him. And then he gives money to you. It’s that type of thing,” Beckwith said. He added, “Everybody does it!”

Federal law, 52 U.S.C. § 30121, prohibits foreign nationals from contributing directly or indirectly to U.S. political campaigns. However, U.S. citizens living abroad and lawful permanent residents may legally contribute. A donor’s overseas location alone does not establish that a contribution is illegal.

Beckwith also suggested that El-Sayed could lose supporters by publicly rejecting Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

“He [El-Sayed] can’t just say, you know, no, I don’t support Hamas, you know, I reject all of them, because he’s going to lose the people that brought him up in the first place,” Beckwith said.

Those remarks do not independently establish that El-Sayed supports either organization or accepted prohibited contributions.

According to yourNEWS, El-Sayed’s campaign rejected Beckwith’s comments as untrue and misinformed and said it complies with Federal Election Commission regulations.

O’Keefe Media Group reported that the Michigan Democratic Party had terminated Beckwith’s employment.
