LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union (MPFFU) is not endorsing Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed after its president said a clerical error placed his name on an initial list of endorsed candidates.

The union later removed El-Sayed’s name from the list.

Michigan News Source reached out to MPFFU President Matt Sahr for comment about the nature of the clerical error, but he did not respond by press time.

As reported by The Midwesterner, Sahr said the union’s initial endorsement list was sent to members on Sept. 11 or 12. El-Sayed’s name appeared at the top alongside Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson. The slate also included endorsements for the Michigan Supreme Court and dozens of local races.

According to The Midwesterner, union leaders later distributed a revised slate that removed El-Sayed and added an endorsement for Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist for secretary of state.

Sahr told the outlet that the initial list had been distributed before it was approved and that the union intended to stay out of the U.S. Senate race. The union is not endorsing Republican nominee Mike Rogers either.

In a letter to union members, Sahr said the endorsement process involves candidate vetting, interviews, expert consultation and strategic insights.

“Our endorsement decisions are made with careful consideration of each candidate’s commitment to labor and the well-being of our members,” Sahr wrote. “We believe that supporting candidates who align with our values is essential for protecting our rights and advancing our collective goals.”

Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat is drawing national attention. Democrats have held both of the state’s Senate seats since 2001. Michigan’s last Republican U.S. senator, Spencer Abraham, served from 1995 to 2001.
