ALLENDALE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — A campus security officer died and a Grand Valley State University student was taken into custody after a hit-and-run early Friday morning.
A GVSU spokesperson said the officer worked as a third-party contractor at the university’s Valley Campus in Allendale.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim, who was working on our campus to help keep our community safe,” GVSU President Philomena Mantella said in a statement.
GVSU recently strengthened enforcement of its visitor policy and restricted overnight campus access following several incidents. Those included vehicle break-ins, a fight involving weapons and an armed man reportedly threatening students in a residence hall.
The access restrictions apply from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
The hit-and-run remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Grand Valley Police Department at 616-331-3255.
