LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – If you’ve noticed a growing number of warnings to stockpile food, water, batteries and other essentials, you’re not imagining things. Apparently, the latest must-have accessory for American households isn’t a new smartphone. It’s a basement full of canned beans and a healthy supply of toilet paper.

Between warnings about artificial intelligence threatening financial systems, possible renewed military strikes against Iran, Pentagon preparations for prolonged disruptions and former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino urging Americans to stockpile food, the preparedness movement is getting plenty of attention.

And while Americans have long been encouraged to keep a three-day emergency kit on hand, reports of the military preparing to operate independently for 90 days raise an obvious question: If the Pentagon is planning for three months of trouble, exactly how far are three days of bottled water, canned beans and flashlight batteries supposed to get the rest of us?

Michigan officials have also joined the conversation, although their warnings are considerably less apocalyptic.

Michigan State Police: Get Your Emergency Kit Ready

On September 3, the Michigan State Police issued a news release encouraging residents to prepare for emergencies by developing family plans and assembling emergency supply kits. The announcement followed severe weather, tornadoes and flooding across Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s September preparedness proclamation recommended keeping a three-day emergency supply kit.

Michigan officials weren’t predicting Armageddon. They were talking about storms, power outages and disasters that can leave families without essential services. To be fair, they issued a similar press release at the same time of year in 2025 – and the year before that. Still, the timing is interesting considering what’s happening nationally.

Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino added his voice to the preparedness chorus this week, encouraging Americans to keep emergency food, water, batteries and radios available. During his October 26 podcast, Bongino referenced international preparedness warnings and the Pentagon’s 90-day military readiness plans.

His advice was straightforward: Don’t panic, but don’t wait until an emergency to figure out where your next meal or bottle of water is coming from. That’s probably sound advice even if no national emergency is looming. After all, winter is right around the corner for much of the country, and Mother Nature has a way of creating emergencies without any help from Washington.

Should Americans Be Worried?

None of these developments proves that a nationwide catastrophe is imminent, but speculation about one is certainly gaining traction online. And while the warnings, announcements and calls for preparedness may be unrelated, taken together, they’re giving Americans plenty of reasons to wonder whether something big is on the horizon.

So at the very least…maybe it’s time to check the flashlight batteries, replenish the pantry and make sure there’s drinking water in the house. And perhaps the most important question of all: Does everybody have enough toilet paper, or are we headed for another 2020-style supermarket showdown?
