OWOSSO, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan News Source reporter Katie Heid is used to covering politicians, breaking news and the latest happenings across the Great Lakes State. But her latest writing adventure involves a considerably more lovable character – a cat named Walter.
Heid, a Michigan journalist and radio news anchor, has written a children’s book titled “Walter Doesn’t Live Here,” a heartwarming story about a friendly feline who seems to belong to everyone in the neighborhood.

And unlike the politicians Heid usually covers, Walter has no trouble winning over the entire community.
One Cat, Lots of Friends
Walter isn’t your typical house cat. He’s a neighborhood celebrity who spends his days visiting friends, playing with children, chasing chipmunks, supervising yard work and even accompanying George the mail carrier on his rounds.
Everywhere Walter goes, he’s welcomed with open arms. But there’s one little mystery running throughout the book: Where does Walter actually live?
As children follow Walter’s adventures, they discover that home isn’t necessarily about one particular house. It’s about friendship, kindness and being loved. Eventually, readers discover where the wandering feline hangs his hat – or, more appropriately, curls up for the night.
From Political Reporting to Kitty Tales
For Heid, who spends much of her professional life reporting on Michigan politics and current events for Michigan News Source, writing about a lovable cat offered a refreshing change of pace.
Instead of political battles and government controversies, she created a story celebrating friendship, community and the special relationships people develop with animals.

Heid said in a press release about the book, “I love my job, and our company does important work,” Heid said. “But covering politics is often a heavy load to carry. Writing about cats? That’s a joy.”
Heid lives in Michigan with her husband, two sons and an assortment of cats who have found their way into the family’s home.
“Walter Doesn’t Live Here” is a charming read for young animal lovers, families and classrooms – and proof that sometimes the best stories don’t involve politics at all. Just a cat with a whole neighborhood wrapped around his little paw.
The book is available through Amazon, Walmart.com and Barnes & Noble. You can also follow Walter’s adventures on Facebook and Instagram under “Walter the Neighborhood Cat.”
