The boy’s mother, Rabab Ibrahim Al Zayad, 27, faces one count of unsafe storage, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said prosecutors would be able to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. She described the potential consequences as unsettling and expressed gratitude that no lives were lost.
According to prosecutors, the boy found the unsecured handgun inside his backpack which was stored in his classroom Monday morning. The gun was allegedly passed among other children before a teacher intervened and secured it.
Police said the gun was loaded and remained in its holster. No one was hurt.
Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy praised the daycare staff’s quick response. The daycare is also adding a safety measure: Staff will begin searching bags.
