LANSING, Mich. (Great Lakes News) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is continuing to use a recall exemption to collect more money for her re-election campaign, and Republicans are challenging those claims in court.

Whitmer raised $3.1 million over three months for her re-election campaign; former Detroit police chief James Craig, who is running as a Republican, collected $1.4 million.

There have been several recall petitions circulating in Michigan, but none reached the signature requirements to force a recall election.

Despite this, Whitmer still had donations that exceeded the $7,150 limit in the third quarter. Two such donations exceeded $50,000.

Other Republican contenders looking to unseat Whitmer, including Garrett Soldano, Tudor Dixon, Ralph Rebandt, and Ryan Kelley, raised the next largest amounts.

Michigan’s primary election is August 2, 2022.
