Nationwide, the country’s 7-day case rate per 100,000 people stands around 176 cases, and the 7-day positivity rate is nearly 7 percent.

Many hospitals across Michigan have stated they are at full capacity and overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.

Recently, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has come under fire for being “MIA” during this recent COVID-19 surge.

A commentary by reporter Chad Livengood with Crain’s Detroit comes one year after Gov. Whitmer instituted a “three-week pause” to curb a coronavirus wave.

“She hasn’t held any news conferences calling on Michigan residents to voluntarily hunker down and mask up to stop the near-rampant spread of the highly contagious delta variant of this airborne plague,” Livengood wrote. “She’s not even out actively promoting any of the three vaccines or booster shots — at a time when antibodies from springtime inoculations are waning.”

Livengood added, “Whitmer has made a calculation to not reimpose restrictions on the movement of people. This is, by nature, a political calculation.”
