CHARLEVOIX, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – There are close to 30 houses in Charlevoix that have been dubbed “Mushroom Houses.” Most of them are private homes, but five you can rent.
Good luck finding open nights at those five, and if you can, prepare to open your pocketbook. A three night booking at The Chalet arriving on August 30th and departing on September 2 will set you back $1661.50.
If renting isn’t your thing, one is for sale. The Charlevoix Mushroom House is currently listed for $4.5 million. The house built in 1920 is also known as the Thatch House for its thatched roof, and was the first home of architect Earl Young. The foundation underneath the Thatch House is made of stones retrieved from Lake Michigan.
The new “mushroom house design,” conceived on a napkin, took nearly 2 years to finalize, according to Mushroomhouses.com. When the home was built, it did not look like the other Mushroom Houses he later built around town as it didn’t have that signature mushroom-looking thatch roof. But it did use the stone construction.
The three-story Thatch House is about 4,000 square feet. There are six bedrooms and five and a half baths. The sale comes with the 2,000-square-foot guest house behind it which has a loft, suite and bathroom. Here is a link to the listing of The Thatch House, which is located at 304 Park Avenue Charlevoix, MI 49720.
