GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A new trend in ‘”wake boats” is spurring the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to make a polite request.

The DNR is proposing larger shoreline buffers and lake depth requirements for people operating “wake boats,” a watersport that’s growing in popularity.

DNR fisheries officials recommend such boats operate at least 500 feet from docks or shorelines and in at least 15-feet of water to prevent lake bottom scouring, shoreline erosion and dock damage from their heavy wakes.

As of now it is not a formal proposal, but rather a set of recommendations to promote awareness of the potential for resource damage.
