GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Grand Rapids Police officer Christopher Schurr will appear in court on Thursday for a preliminary exam hearing after the Kent County prosecutor charged him with second-degree murder in June.
Christopher Schurr faces the charges which stem from an April 4 traffic stop. He says he pulled over 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya because his car and the license plate did not match.

Body camera footage shows Lyoya resisting arrest. Schurr said he feared for his life as Lyoya grabbed for his taser. Schurr shot him. Toxicology reports revealed Lyoya’s blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit at the time of the incident.
The judge will determine whether there is enough evidence for Schurr to go to trial. The preliminary exam will likely extend through Friday.
