LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – With five days to go before election day and more than 1 million absentee ballots already turned in, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is standing by her mainstay issue in which she’s fought “like hell” to preserve: abortion up through all nine months of pregnancy.
On Thursday afternoon, Gov. Whitmer emailed out a press release in response to an article in American Progress which is titled “Abortion Bans Will Result in More Dying Women.” The article states, “researchers expect to see the highest increases in deaths in the event of state-level bans on all abortions are Florida (29 percent), Georgia (29 percent), and Michigan (25 percent).”

“This report underscores the horrifying reality that a staggering number of Michigan women will die if our state’s 1931 abortion ban goes into effect,” said Gov. Whitmer in a press release. “Simply put: the ban will kill moms and women who become pregnant.”
According to its website, American Progress describes itself as “an independent, nonpartisan policy institute that is dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action. Our aim is not just to change the conversation, but to change the country.”
Gov. Whitmer has refused to answer questions about where her cutoff is for abortions. In the October 25 debate, GOP challenger Tudor Dixon pushed Whitmer for an answer, which she did not get.
“The governor has just been dishonest,” Dixon said referring to Whitmer’s record on abortion and working with bipartisan measures. “In her past, she’s voted against a ban on partial-birth abortion.”
Dixon is unapologetically pro-life and has been endorsed by Right to Life of Michigan.
The Whitmer administration has filed several motions in the months leading up to the June U.S. Supreme Court decision which returned abortion regulations to the states.

Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban is in limbo after a judge issued an injunction prohibiting its implementation, which would allow for prosecutors to charge abortion providers with crimes.
The election is Tuesday, November 8. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
