GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A trial date of March 13, 2023 has been set for former Grand Rapids Police Department officer Christopher Schurr. He faces second degree murder charges in the shooting death of a motorist.

After a two day preliminary hearing in October, a judge ruled that Christopher Schurr’s case would go to trial .

Schurr shot and killed 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya in April during a traffic stop. Schurr said he pulled Lyoya over because his license plate did not match his vehicle. In addition, Schurr said Lyoya resisted arrest and tried grab the officer’s taser. Schurr said he feared for his life and shot Lyoya.

Toxicology results later revealed that Lyoya’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit when Schurr pulled him over.

Last week, attorneys for Patrick Lyoya’s family filed a civil lawsuit against the former officer and the City of Grand Rapids.
