Embattled East Lansing High School Cancels Classes on Friday Prior to ‘Listening Session’ with Mayor, Police

EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Fresh off a student protest over violence and safety concerns, a lockdown, and a cancellation of a cross-town basketball game,  East Lansing High School cancelled classes on Friday.

Administrators postponed the Thursday night basketball game between East Lansing High School and Okemos High School and cited safety concerns. According to WILX, a gun fell out of a student’s backpack during a fight at the East Lansing boys’ varsity basketball game last week. The student does attend East Lansing High School.

Pleas to administrators and the East Lansing Board of Education regarding safety concerns appear to have fallen on deaf ears, but city officials hope to change that on Friday night.

East Lansing Mayor Ron Bacon is hosting a school and public safety “listening session” for students and parents to voice their concerns at 5:30 p.m. at the Hannah Community Center.

In addition, the East Lansing Board of Education is hosting a special meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in the East Lansing High School auditorium.
