LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer doubled down on Sunday over her use of the social media app TikTok, saying it serves as a ‘communication tool.’

“We use TikTok on one device that has nothing else on it,” Whitmer told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.” Whitmer went on to say, “It is a communication tool. We don’t do it because it’s fun…whether we like it or not, that is a tool for disseminating important information. And that’s how we use it,” Whitmer said.

In addition, Whitmer acknowledged privacy concerns about TikTok and told CNN she worries about social media more broadly. “I’m concerned about a lot of ways that social media is curated and drags people down rabbit holes in this country,” Whitmer said.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not mince words when it came to Michigan’s governor.

“I’m not sure how putting our national security at risk outweighs [Whitmer’s] dog videos and favorite soda choices that she’s posting on TikTok,” Sanders said. “Then again, she is not someone I’m looking to for advice.”

So far, 32 states have taken action to restrict TikTok on state-issued devices, with nine of those states also banning additional apps. At least four states have proposed similar bans. Michigan joins 10 other states who currently have no restrictions or proposed bills on Tik Tok, Kentucky being the latest state to pass a bill last week.
