LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Legislature passed an amendment on Wednesday that expands to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act with legal protections for the LGBTQ community in Michigan.

The amendment explicitly includes protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. It prohibits discrimination in employment, public accommodations and public services, educational facilities, and housing and real estate based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status.

The bill now heads to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk where she is expected to sign it.
