FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The University of Michigan-Flint has partnered with UM-Flint Pride to conduct self-defense classes at the end of April specifically for the LGBTQA+ community.
William McKibbin, associate professor of psychology at UM-Flint, is the instructor for the twice-a-week classes that highlight self-defense techniques derived from Tang Soo Do, a traditional Korean art.
“Every technique we review was chosen because they are simple and easy to remember,” said McKibbin. He also said he will emphasize situational awareness, judgment, and confidence when it comes to combatting potentially dangerous situations.
McKibbin said he’s wanted to offer a self-defense class for a while now, especially since anyone can benefit from it. He also said that the LGBTQIA+ community faces an increased risk of violence.
“I’m hoping I can offer this course regularly in the future or even help advise a martial arts club on campus.”
Michigan News Source reached out to the university and McKibbin to see if anyone could join the class or if it specifically designed for LGBTQA+ members. We also inquired as to how the class would ensure only LGBTQA+ members are enrolled. We did not receive a response back.
More information on the class can be found here.
