LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Three years after Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she supported the “spirit of defund the police” and marched with Black Lives Matters protestors while the rest of the state remained in lockdown, she signed legislation which she says will retain police officers and keep communities safe.

In a press release, Whitmer said the legislation allows law enforcement agencies to enter into agreements to collect reimbursement for all or part of the cost of an employee’s academy training if the employee voluntarily leaves employment with the agency within four years of completing academy training.

“These bills will help police departments provide quality academy training and retain officers so they can build relationships with the communities they serve,” Whitmer said.

Detroit Police Chief James White said, “This legislation will help ensure that community policing continues.”
