A Miller hearing is required for defendants under the age of 17. In this pre-sentencing hearing, a judge will take into consideration Ethan Crumbley’s age at the time of the shooting and what was going on in his life, among other factors. The judge will not sentence Crumbley at the Miller hearing. However, the judge will set a date to announce his decision and another date for Crumbley’s sentencing.
Crumbley pleaded guilty in October 2022 to 24 counts including terrorism and four counts of first-degree premeditated murder.
His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are facing charges of their own. Prosecutors are accusing them of ignoring their son’s cries for help and unstable mental health in addition to purchasing the gun for him he used in the killing spree.
