KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Kalamazoo Public Schools are being sued for disability discrimination by parents Angela and Lee Smith. They filed the federal lawsuit this month, saying their son suffers from anxiety, depression, and ADHD, and that the school district came up with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), but did not implement it until this February.

The student had COVID-19 in late 2021 and was out of school for nearly a month, according to the lawsuit. His parents claim the district did not accommodate for his loss of learning.

The Smiths took family medical leave to care for their son after he stopped going to class due to his struggles, losing around $20,000 in wages and hospital bills for their son cost them more than $300,000 last year when he was hospitalized for nearly three months. They are seeking damages for the lost finances and attorney’s fees in the lawsuit.
